Police sergeant seriously injured in Cospicua argument

A police sergeant was seriously injured during an argument we was trying to break up in Cospicua this afternoon just before five o'clock.

The incident, which took place in the vicinity of St Paul's Bastion, saw the intervention of the Rapid Intervention Unit.  When the RIU arrived on the scene, the situation appeared to have dissipated when suddenly three people - an 18, a 24 and a 29 year old from Cospicua - began arguing once again.

The sergeant was injured when the offers intervened to calm the situation down.

The sergeant was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment and although he is certified as having suffered serious injuries, he is not in danger of dying.

A constable was also slightly injured during the scuffle.                                           

The three individuals are being held for questioning.

 

PN statement 

In a statement, PN Deputy Leader Beppe Fenech Adami, who is the shadow minister for home affairs, condemned all forms of violence on police officers.

Dr Fenech Adami said the Opposition had recently moved amendments to introduce harsher penalties in cases of violence against police officers. The PN insisted that justice had to be carried out in all cases, including yesterday’s incident.

The Opposition expressed solidarity with all police officers who had been victims of violence and wished them a speedy recovery.
