Wednesday, 6 July 2016, 21:54 Last update: about 9 years ago

Neptunes Grimaldi     16     Valletta McDonalds     9

(4-2, 6-0, 5-2, 1-5)

Neptunes grabbed the opportunity to overtake both San giljan and Sliema, and now grace the top of the standings, with all teams playing equal matches.  They rode roughshod over the Valletta outfit, and  after a second session whitewash, they continued to impose theri superiority on the match. When everything was done and dusted, in the last quarter, they rested their chief custodian, Alan Borg Cole, who is still nursing a thigh injury, giving Matthew Castillo a piece of teh encounter, as they did with their young protegees on the bench. Obviously the Citizens took the opportunity to add up a more respectable score. Neptunes were ably led by their duo, Cosmin Radu and Steve Camilleri, as they made nearly full use of their man up occasions, failing only once in eight situations. Valletta had Dmitri Kholod and Michael Spiteri Staines grabbing nearly all their side's tally, but they could only convert their last man up, out of the four they had.

A Kholod penalty opened up the scoring, for Valletta, but Neptunes countered with a Steve Camilleri brace and a Niki Lanzon goal. Kholod reduced teh Citizens' deficit, with Radu again giving Neptunes a double advantage. The second period was all in Neptunes' favour, as they shot in half a dozen goals, without any reply from Valletta. Steve Camilleri, a couple from  Jeremy Abela, and three more from Radu had Neptunes forging well in front till the interval, when they were enjoying a solid 10-2 advantage.

After the break the Citizens opened up well, as Charlie Zammit and Spiteri Staines scored two quick gaols, but neptunes had a ready reply, as Radu, Lanzon and the Camilleri brothers, Steve and Jordan pushed their side to a much better 15-4 lead. In the meantime Valletta's Michael Rizzo was shown a red card, and took no further part in the game. The last session came about, with Neptunes' change in personnel. Kholod and Spiteri staines scored for Valleta, with Steve Camilleri netting Neptunes' last strike. Spiteri Staines, twice, and Kholod closed the scoring in the match, making the final score a more realistic looking one, when in fact it was not.

Cosmin Radu ended with a double hat trick, and Steve Camilleri netted a nap hand of goals for Neptunes. Valletta had both Dmitri Kholod and Michael Spiteri Staines on a poker of goals.

Ta Xbiex repeat their first round winning score.

Ta Xbiex Amigos     11     Otters     9

(5-0, 1-3, 2-3, 3-3)

Ta Xbiex had already obtained this score against Otters, in their firat meeting, and the three points gained took them away from their opponents, still languishing pointless, at the bottom of the league table. It looked as if Ta Xbiex were going to run away with the match, after the opening session, but the Gozitans slowly rallied back, and went quite near, only to lose out  in the end. Ta Xbiex managed five goals in eleven man ups in their favour, with Otters scoring twice in five attempts.

Ta Xbiex were all over their opponents at teh start, with Jerome Zammit Gregory and Edward Meli scoring twice, and skipper, Rheinhard Attard also netting, for a heavy 5-0 advantage. Otters started their way back in teh second session, as Gabriel Mizzi, Luke Hyzler and a Marko Jelaka penalty had them closer. Meli scored again for Ta Xbiex, to take them to a 6-3 lead at the interval.

After the break Otters put in three more goals, from Hyzler, Jelaka and Ryan Gauci, with Ta Xbiex answering back twice, with Meli and Michele Mifsud strikes, as their lead went down to 8-6. In teh last quarter Michael Borg Millo had the Gozitans just a goal away. Attard restored ta Xbiex on their double advantage, but Mizzi again took the Gozitans just behind their adversaries. Attard and Mifsud eased the Ta Xbiex players' minds, with a three goal advantage. Otters lost Borg Millo, on a red card, with Jelaka netting thiri last goal, which was not enough, as Ta Xbiex still had their noses in front, at the end of the match.
