A Bangladeshi man was taken to hospital in an ambulance after he was hit by a car in Birkirkara this afternoon.

The police said that the accident took place in Galanton Vassallo Street, corner with Psaila Street in Birkirkara.

Witnesses said that the man was hit as the car, a Mercedes Benz ML320, turned a corner from Psaila Street. The car, driven by a 53-year-old of Qormi, then crashed into another vehicle, a Ford which was parked in the street.

He was in the company of three Bangladeshi colleagues, one of whom said that they have been living in Malta for the past five years. He said they came to Malta in 2011 as refugees.

In broken English, he said that he managed to pull back from the road to avoid the car but his colleague was not so lucky.

Another colleague, speaking in Italian, said they were afraid when they saw the car coming.

The police said the Bangladeshi, aged 22, was taken to hospital where he was found to have suffered grievous injuries.
