Church reacts to euthanasia debate by setting up a home for the terminally ill

Archbishop Charles Scicluna announced that the Church will soon be identifying a site where Dar il-Hniena can be set up. Dar il-Hniena (Home of Mercy) will be offering palliative care for persons with terminal illnesses.

The aim of the Church is to set up a foundation which will be taking care of this residency, in collaboration with other organisations who work in this sector.

The Archbishop said that this will be a concrete answer on how the Maltese Church will offer to those who are afraid of dying without dignity, and all the pain that terminal illnesses bring with it.

This announcement came only a day after the Archbishop, in a letter to the MPs, appealed for the safeguarding and dignity of the human life. The letter regarded the euthanasia issue.

Archbishop Scicluna made this announcement during a mass held today at the Curia's chapel in Floriana. He said that the launch of Dar il-Hniena will come at the 50 year anniversary of Dar tal-Providenza.
