Former Nationalist MP Franco Debono today chose not to say whether he has been approached by Labour Party officials to contest the general elections on the PL ticket.

“I wouldn’t comment on that,” he said when asked.

Dr Debono was contacted by The Malta Independent after comments he made on One Radio today were interpreted by Labour supporters on the social media as having been a hint that he is considering contesting the election with the PL.

While saying he does no exclude running for the Labour Party, he said he likes politics, and asks himself “Why am I out of politics? Just because I presented reforms that the PN at the time resisted? Now, to be fair, they voted in favour of my law on party finance, so the party has changed a bit. Even the PN is acknowledging they were good reforms”.

Turning to Labour, he said they are implementing a great number of reforms he had proposed.

During the last legislature, Dr Debono fell out with the PN, with many conflicts having arisen in Parliament prior to the 2013 general elections. Dr Debono was later appointed President of the Law Commission, tasked with revising, updating and consolidating laws according to the Statute Law Revision Act, enacted in 1980.

Dr Debono also said that he does not exclude a return to politics, and that persons from the general public, both PN and PL, have approached him in the past asking him to make a return.
