The Maltese contingent taking part in the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, was given a warm welcome.

The contingent, led by chef de mission David Azzopardi, attended a ceremony during which the Maltese national anthem was played and the Maltese flag raised.

Malta will be represented by seven athletes: shooters William Chetcuti and Eleonor Bezzina, swimmers Nicola Muscat and Andrew Chetcuti, weightlifter Kyle Micallef, and Charlotte Wingfield and Luke Bezzina in athletics.

Malta is fielding its biggest contingent for the past 16 years.
