The Imam of the Muslim Community in Malta, Mohamed El Sadi yesterday attended the mass celebrating the feast of Santa Marija held at the Cathedral in Gozo. El Sadi attended this celebration following an invitation by Gozo Bishop Mgr Mario Grech.
His appearance serves as a symbol of the fraternity between the Christian and Muslim community in Malta and Gozo, especially in the current international context, the Diocese of Gozo said.
In his homily, Bishop Mario Grech said that there is no religion which believes in violence. He referred to the international conflict and how some are attributing its cause to one particular religion. But as he explained, both Christians and Muslims were victims of several violent attacks.
"The religion which uses violence, would be contradicting itself. The real reasons behind most conflicts are other things which go beyond one's religion, such as ideology and financial gain."
He said the actors of these wars are not only those wearing armour, but also those who wear suit and ties.
The Bishop then referred to other conflicts, which affects the relationship in our families and which still leaves victims.
"I invited Imam El Sadi to join us so that together, we pray to God for peace. Muslims have a great respect for God and I believe that Holy Mary can help us get closer to each other. She is the only woman mentioned in the Koran."
In his reply to the Bishop's invitation, the Imam wrote that he is deeply saddened by the brutal killing of Fr Jacques Hamel. "This is a crime against us Imams, our Mosques and our religion."
"Terrorists want to make our life hell and stir war among religions. But we will not play in their hands. Islam and Christianity are for tolerance, peace and mutual respect."
