The Malta Red Cross has advised swimmers to exercise caution this week as a number of beaches have been hit by strong currents, which make the bays dangerous to swim in.
A double-red flag posted on beaches should be considered a warning sign not to venture into the water. Yesterday, lifeguards at Golden Bay had to provide assistance to 7 people who ignored these warnings. Swimmers are urged not to underestimate the nature of strong currents, which could be perilous and even fatal.
Just a few weeks ago, the corpse of a Hungarian tourist was discovered in Ramla l-Hamra, entangled in a line that delineates the swimmers’ zone. The young teenager went a missing a few days earlier after going for a swim in rough seas in Marsalforn.
Beaches affected today are Golden Bay and GhajnTuffieha.
