Labour Party councillors in Marsascala have rejected a proposal made by a Nationalist councillor – and seconded by Labour deputy mayor – for the government to take over the Jerma Hotel site and turn it into a public space.
The motion was submitted by PN’s Charlot Cassar, and supported by Labour councillor Desiree Attard, but this was not enough as other Labour councillors voted against to defeat the motion 4-3.

The three votes in favour of the motion were those of PN councillors, while Ms Attard was unavailable to cast her vote in Tuesday’s sitting. Although she expressed herself in favour of the Mr Cassar’s motion, her support for the cause was not taken into account when the voting took place.
The Marsascala council is made up of six PL councillors and three from the PN. Apart from Ms Attard, another PL councillor was not present for the meeting.
In the motion, Mr Cassar called upon the council to make a formal request to the Prime Minister for the government to buy the Jerma Hotel site and, once the former complex is demolished, the site is converted into open space to be used by the public.
