Temporary traffic management measures at The Strand

Tuesday, 20 September 2016, 16:27 Last update: about 9 years ago

The traffic management committee, led by Transport Minister Joe Mizzi, this morning discussed the traffic management system in operation at The Strand in Gzira, with traffic lights there flashing amber.

Last Friday, a woman was seriously injured when she was hit by a car in the area. She is still in hospital.

During the meeting, it was decided that this was still the best way in which the traffic is managed for the time being until the Kappara Junction project is still ongoing.

The amber lighting, according to the Highway Code, means that drivers should give priority to pedestrians. When nobody is crossing the road, drivers should proceed with caution. This, the committee ruled, is the most secure way.

Transport Malta implemented this system as part of a plan to create alternative routes during the Kappara project works. Were it not for this, cars would need to stop more often with the result of more traffic congestion.

The bus lane will remain suspended until the project is completed.
