Three men have suffered injuries after an explosion on a van in Marsa. The accident occurred earlier this evening, at around 6:15pm, when an explosion took place inside a Ford Transit van on Aldo Moro Road, causing it to crash into an electricity pole.

The interior of the van was completely destoyed and the windows of an Opel Zafira that was driving by the van shattered, injuring the driver - a 37-year-old man from Zabbar.

The men inside the Ford were a 35-year-old from Qormi and a 45-year-old from Naxxar. It is understood that one of them is in critical condition.

The AFM's bomb diposal unit was called on site and a robot was deployed. According to unconfirmed reports the AFM personnel found explosive material - which is not linked to fireworks - inside the van.

In the meantime the road was closed to traffic and motorists were advised to avoid the area. The injured were assisted by other motorists until ambulances arrived.
