The motion for 16-year-olds to be allowed voting rights in general election, must pass through parliament immediately so that youths could vote in the upcoming election, Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil has said.
He was speaking during a National Youth Council executive committee meeting this morning. He applauded the KNZ for their declaration in favour of this right, adding that the step taken by the Opposition and MP Marlene Farrugia confirms the trust in the Maltese and Gozitan youths.
Dr Busuttil criticised government for allowing 16-year-olds to vote in local council elections, only to then cancel the ones meant to take place next year. "The youths weren't even allowed to vote in the referendum last year".
Dr Busuttil also spoke about youths who fail or do not sit for their o-levels, stating that Malta needs to change its policies to assure that these youths are not condemned to life on a minimum wage.
