The Civil Court has awarded damages amounting to a total of  €12,859.63 in a case regarding the illegal fireworks explosion which occurred in Naxxar on Triq Hal Dghejf  in March 2008. The blast also resulted in the deaths of  the accused, Saviour Camilleri.

Mr.Camilleri, was also found to be responsible for causing the explosion. His widow, Maria Camilleri was also found to be jointly culpable due to her negligence since she was knowledgeable and aware of her husband's illegal activities in their garage.

Carl and Victoria Vella, who lived opposite the garage, were awarded the sum of €7672.41 due to the damage that was inflicted on the façade of their residence. Saviour and Josephine Agius, who also experience some damage to their property were awarded  the sum of € 5187.22. The court has ordered that the damages are to be paid by the widow of the perpretator, Maria Camilleri.

There were seven couples who were parties in the case, however no further compensation was given, as the cost of damages was covered.

This follows a case heard in the Court of Appeal in 2014, were Maria Camilleri was required to pay €8,400 in damages to MIB Insurance Brokers (Malta) Ltd., also due to the explosion.

The explosion which occurred whilst Mr.Camilleri was working on the fireworks in the garage, could have been substantially worse. Army explosive experts had also removed a truckload worth of firework and pyrotechnic material from two other garages in the same residential area.
