16 year-olds should be granted voting rights as soon as possible - Junior College Student Council

The Junior College Student Council (KSJC) finds itself disappointed at the fact that the voting age will be lowered to 16 years only as from the year 2024.

"The proposals introduced to the National Children's Policy reflect much improvement which has been done with regards to social rights and responsiblities of youths. However we completely disagree that the right to vote will be entitled to 16 year-olds only as from the elections which take place from 2024 onwards".

"Ever since the Government introduced the idea of lowering the age of voting eligibility, we have been at the forefront to support and promote the idea, pending the necessary educational process to inform youths of their new right. Having gone through this process before the Spring Hunting Referendum and Local Council Elections, where we were immensely disappointed that 16-year-olds were not given the right in the former and we believe that it is now time that this right is extended to all elections taking place in Malta".

"In light of this we would like to join other student organisations which have called for the entitlement of voting rights to 16-year-olds in recent weeks, and call for all responsible authorities to entitle 16-year-olds the right to vote as soon as possible, and not in 2024".
