This morning a total of 52 constables, 35 men and 17 women, were appointed to the rank of Sergeant. The ceremony was held at the Police General Headquarters and was chaired by the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Carmelo Abela and Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar.

Minister Abela said that “restructuring the output of human resources is the foundation for a strong Police Force, which is proactive and closer to the community” . He said that this would be achieved by designing new training programs at the Academy for Disciplinary Bodies which would provide the skills required for individuals to continue to develop.

The Minister also mentioned that they are currently running the interview process for a new post for the Chief Executive Officer in the Police Force who will be working closely with the Police Commissioner with management duties. Mr Abela also issued calls for application for the post of Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner.

It was also noted that the previous week saw another 40 police officers appointed as reserve constables on a part-time basis to provide support.

Minister Abela concluded his speech by noting that in the next 3 years, 112 constables will be given the opportunity to be promoted to the post of Sergeant after they have served a minimum of 3 years of service; and have gone under scrutiny by a selection panel and passed examinations.

Commissioner Cutajar congratulated the new Sergeants, and spoke of the Police Force as an establishment that offers opportunities for career advancement. He also spoke of the supervisory nature of a Sergeant whilst also ensuring that the duties of Constables are for the protection of society.
