A number of youth and student political organisations (Alternattiva Demokrattika Zghazagh, Forum Zghazagh Laburisti, Moviment Zghazagh Partit Nazzjonalista, Pulse and Studenti Demokristjani Maltin) together with the National Youth Council have expressed their support of the proposal to reduce the voting age to 16 in all elections.

In a signed statement the groups stated that they “
believe that youths are not only the future of our country but more importantly the present and therefore should have a say in our country's direction.”

This statement follows the motion presented to the Speaker of the House by PN Whip David Agius and Independent MP Marlene Farrugia on Monday.

The voting age was reduced to 16 in 2015’s local council elections. The turnout, which was 68%, was a significant improvement from the 2012 local elections which was 59%.

In Europe, Austria has extended the vote to 16 in all elections since 2007 with positive results and high turnout rates (averaging 70%-80%).  The Scottish Independence Referendum in 2014 was the first instance were people between the ages of 16 and 17 voted in a referendum within the United Kingdom. 75% of the age group voted, presenting a larger turnout than 18-24 year olds and 25-34 year olds.
