Speaking during the ceremony, Mr Abela referred to the recent improvements in the working conditions of police officers. He said officers were being given more advancement opportunities and the force was constantly investing in its human resources and in new equipment.

Mr Abela also said officers were given new rights, including the right to join a union, and were benefitting from tax reductions for extra duties.

Efforts were also being made to improve their working conditions, including the district police stations, while discussions are ongoing on the possible introduction of an insurance policy for members of the disciplinary forces and the settlement of overdue overtime payments.

Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar said he was honoured to take part in the medal ceremony, which was held on the feast of St Michael – the patron saint of police officers.

Society depends on the professionalism, training and experiences of the police who not only protect but also defend our democratic style of life, he said.
