PN calls on government to set up Vote 16 Committee again to discuss proposal

Thursday, 29 September 2016, 17:07 Last update: about 9 years ago

The Nationalist Party has said that in the light of the latest motion presented by the PN Whip David Agius and Independent MP Marlene Farrugia, the government should immediately appoint new members for the Vote 16 Committee.

This newspaper had revealed how the Vote 16 Committee was without a Chairperson and had not met since March. The Vote 16 Committee was purposefully set up to study the possibility of having vote extended to those of 16 years and over and to carry out an information campaign if the proposed amendment gets the green light.

In a statement, the PN whip and the representative on the Vote 16 Committee, Mark Anthony Sammut, said that the fact that this committee has not met in months, shows how it was never the government's attention to extend the voting right to 16 years of age. "Joseph Muscat even postponed the Local Council elections, the same way how he did not allow 16-year-olds to vote in last year's referendum."

The PN called for the government to discuss the motion immediately once Parliament kicks off.
