A worker who had suffered life-threatening injuries following the collapse of a light structure at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre in preparation for the show ‘Gensna’, told the court that he is now facing unemployment and has no source of income.

Emanuel Ronayne was testifying before Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera in the case against the MFCC directors following the incident which took place in 2014.

He recalled how he was working on site when the metal structure collapsed on him. He said he had felt a massive blow to his back and eventually found himself trapped between this metal structure and the stage.

The worker was rushed to hospital where it was confirmed that the man had suffered broken ribs, injured his spinal cord and was in critical condition.

Dr Jonathan Joslyn, a consultant at the emergency department was also called to testify. He recalled how after being called on site, the worker was found conscious but with respiratory problems as his lungs were punctured.

MFCC directors, Winston Zahra, Gerald Borg and Joseph Fenech, together with the company’s CEO Anita Mifsud, are being charged with involuntarily causing grievous injuries to the worker. The five officials are also accused of causing Nexos and RVC ltd to suffer damages and breaching the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The prosecution is led by inspector Robert Vella while lawyers Joe Giglio, Stephen Tonna Lowell, Stepha Camilleri and Joseph J. Vella are leading the defence.
