The Medical Association of Malta called upon the chairman of the Medicines Authority to withdraw a claim he made that abotion is taking place illegally in Malta.
MAM today also insisted that the chairman and board members of the Medicines Authority should make declarations of conflict of interest to maintain the integrity of their posts.
In a statement, MAM referred to a recent television programme during which the chairman of the medicines authority, Prof. Anthony Serracino Inglott, claimed that medicine importers discussed commercially sensitive information with him regarding the number of pharmacies that are willing to sell the Morning After Pill (MAP). He also admitted that he did not discuss the MAP with doctors or pharmacies.
In the same interview the chairman declared that abortions are being carried out in Malta and these will decrease in number after the introduction of the MAP, MAM said.
Abortion is a criminal offence in Malta and this allegation worries the public and tarnishes the reputation of the whole medical profession. MAM called on the Professor to withdraw his unsubstantiated allegation promptly.
