One fatal car accident every 2 weeks in 2016 so far - 22 deaths, including 9 bikers

Twenty-two people have died on Maltese roads so far in 2016, with an average of one death every two weeks.

The latest victim was Matthew Caruana, whose funeral was held on Tuesday following his death on the Coast Road last Sunday.

He was one of nine bikers who have died in traffic accidents this year.

This is a full list of the 22 fatal traffic accidents that have taken place between 1 January and 16 November.

1.  Tuesday 5 January – Labour Avenue, Naxxar

26-year-old motorcyclist Johanna Boni lost her life in a traffic accident after colliding with a construction truck on Labour Avenue, Naxxar.

The Sicilian native marked the first fatality of the year.

Daryl Cauchi, Boni’s boyfriend, released a moving statement on social media, saying that Johanna was “the best thing that ever happened to him.”


2. Saturday 30 January- Triq Sant’ Andrija, Pembroke

Marthese Zarb, a 52-year-old woman, succumbed to her injuries following an accident on Triq Sant’ Andrija on Saturday, 30th January. The victim and her 18-year-old son were passengers in her husband's car when it crashed into another vehicle driven by a 41-year-old man from Zabbar.

Her family had agreed to donate her organs.


3. Sunday 21 February – Triq il-Mellieha, Manikata

A 26-year-old man, Clint Farrugia sadly died after he was involved in a traffic accident, at on Triq il-Mellieha, Manikata.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, who was from Rabat, was driving a Suzuki GSX and collided with a Nissan X-Trail driven by a 50-year-old man residing in Hal Qormi and then with another vehicle, a Mazda 323 driven by a 45-year-old man residing in Marsaxlokk.

4. Wednesday 30 March – Mgr. Mikiel Azzopardi Street, Siggiewi

Lourdes Pace passed away when the car she was driving collided with an electricity pole on Mgr Mikiel Azzopardi Street, Siggiewi.

The woman was driving a Toyota Vitz when the vehicle crashed into an electricity pole and careened onto another car parked in the street.

5. Sunday 10 April – Katarina Vitale Street, St.Lucija

A 67 year old man ended up in a critical condition after being hit by a Fiat Punto driven by a 23-year-old man residing in St Lucija. The accident took place in Triq Katarina Vitale in St Lucija.

 The man, who resided in Tarxien, was rushed to the accident and emergency for treatment. The man unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on 27th September.



6.Thursday 28 April – Zabbar Road, Fgura

Irene Tanti Bellotti, a 77-year-old woman from Marsascala died in a traffic accident on Zabbar Road, Fgura.

The woman was riding as a passenger in a car that crashed into a stationary vehicle in Zabbar Road at around 10pm.

The car, a Toyota Rac4, rolled on its side on impact and the woman died on the spot. 

The police said that the 79-year-old driver, resident of Marsascala, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a Renault, which was stationary at the time.

7.Saturday 7 May Vjal il-Haddiem, Rabat

A 97-year-old man passed away after being hit by a Toyota Townace driven by a 48-year-old man on Vjal il-Haddiem, Rabat.

8.  Saturday 14 May - San Pawl tal-Qlejgha Street, Mosta

A 50-year-old Australian native died whilst cycling after colliding with a car on San Pawl tal-Qliejgha Street, Mosta.

The cyclist was riding along San Pawl tal-Qlejgha Street when he was hit by a Toyota Vitz driven by a 29-year-old from Zebbug at 2.45pm.

9. Sunday 29 May – Dom Mintoff Road, Cospicua

A man from Vittoriosa, Manuel Micallef, known as DJ Lito, died after a traffic accident involving three cars in Dom Mintoff Road, Cospicua.

The accident happened at 6.50pm in a three car collision involving Manuel Micallef’s Toyota Aygo, a Ford Fusion driven by a 53-year-old man, and a Toyota Vitz driven by a 41-year-old.

10. Monday 13 June – Triq is-Salina, Salina

Ralph Farrugia, a 49-year-old motorcyclist died after crashing with two cars in Salina. He was hospitalised after he was injured in a three-way crash with two cars in Salina, and died later.


A police spokesperson had said that the motorcyclist had initially crashed head-on with one of the cars, after which the second car was hit.

The incident occurred at Triq is-Salina around 7pm close to Telgha t’Alla u Ommu Hill.

11.Saturday 9 July– Triq il-Marfa, Ghadira

A 40-year-old from Mellieha, Andre Debattista, passed away after he was hit by a Toyota Passo driven by a 22-year-old from Fgura at about 6.30am. Debattista, a father of two girls, was walking with his 10-year-old daughter when the accident happened. The girl sustained no injuries though she was suffering from shock.

12.Sunday 10  July – Regional Road, Tal Qroqq

A 27-year-old biker, Nick Agius from Paola, died when his Honda motorcycle crashed into a wall in the Tal-Qroqq tunnels.

Eyewitnesses had said that the bike ended up several metres away from where the body was found.

13.Tuesday 19  July – Regional Road, Kappara

Tara Licari, 17, died after a car being driven by her older brother crashed into a wall on Regional Road, limits of Kappara.

An 18-year-old Danish man who was also a passenger in the car was seriously injured in the crash, which happened at around 5am.

Police said that it appeared the driver, a 23-year-old Balzan resident, was driving a Toyota Vitz from the direction of St Julian’s towards Sliema when he lost control of the car, crashing into a wall and subsequently another car.

14. Tuesday 16 August - Triq ix-Xatt, Sliema

A 26-year-old Libyan man died following a traffic accident in Sliema at the early hours of the morning.

Preliminary investigations found that the man was hit by a taxi, which was being driven by a 61-year-old man, residing in Msida.

15. Tuesday 23 AugustMarina Street, Msida

An elderly man died after being hit by a BMW driven by a 35-year-old Floriana man at a pelican crossing in Msida.

16. Tuesday 13 September – Regional Road, Msida

A 30-year-old Royal Navy sailor died when he was hit by a car in Regional Road, Msida.

The police said the man was hit at 1am by a Peugeot 508 driven by a 42-year-old of Cospicua in the direction of Santa Venera.

17. Wednesday 21 September – Hal Far Road, Birzebbugia

A biker passed away after he collided with an Opel Tigra driven by a 21-year-old from Birzebbuga on Hal Far Road.

The driver had originally been taken to the hospital in critical condition but eventually succumbed to his injuries

18. Thursday 22 September – Dawret il-Gzejjer, Bugibba

Two foreigners were injured, one critically who later died, in a strange accident that took place at Dawret il-Gzejjer, the Bugibba seafront promenade.

The foreigner on the bike, aged 40, seemed to have lost control of the bike, a Suzuki, which mounted the pavement and collided with some passersby.

19.Sunday 9 October– Louis Wettinger Street, Mellieha

A 36-year-old man from Balzan died in a motorcycle accident on Louis Wettinger Street in the Ta' Pennellu area of Mellieha at 9am.



20.Thursday 13  October – Eucharistic Congress Road, Mosta

A 77 year old woman died after she was hit by a Toyota Dyna driven by a 68-year-old man on Eucharistic Congress Road, Mosta.

21. Saturday 5  November – Hal Far Road, Birzebbugia

A motorcyclist died following a crash with car in Hal Far Road, the police said. Police also informed the press that the motorcycle had crashed into the back of a car driven by a 19 year-old from Luqa



22.Sunday 13 November – Coast Road, Salina

A young motorcyclist, Matthew Caruana, died after a traffic accident on the Coast Road after losing control of his bike and crashing into a barrier.

The biker was on the road with a number of other motorcyclists, including his father.
