Maltese parliamentary delegation meet Chairpersons of Economic Affairs committees on energy union

Friday, 2 December 2016, 17:44 Last update: about 8 years ago

A Maltese parliamentary delegation, composed of Chairman of the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee Silvio Schembri, Chairman of the Social Affairs Committee Anthony Agius Decelis, and Opposition Whip David Agius is currently participating in a meeting of the Chairpersons of the Economic Affairs Committees of the national parliaments of the European Union to discuss the Energy Union which is taking place in Bratislava.

The delegates were welcomed by Ms Jana Kiššová, Chairperson of the Economic Affairs Committee of the National Council of the Slovak Republic. Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission and European Commissioner responsible for the Energy Union explained that the European Commission presented a package of measures on clean energy only two days ago. The Commission's proposals have three main objectives: firstly, improving energy efficiency; secondly, achieving global leadership in renewable energies and thirdly, providing a fair deal for consumers. Commissioner Šefčovič argued that approximately 50 million citizens in the EU have to face the dilemma of either buying bread or heating their homes. For this reason, the Commission's package is centred on achieving a fair and socially-just energy transition.

The meeting was divided into three main sessions; the first, on the state of the Energy Union; the second, on adopting a more integrated approach to research and innovation; and the third, on developing smart EU energy systems with the consumer at their centre.

This was the last meeting under the Parliamentary dimension of the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU.
