The Sette Gugnio monument, dedicated to the victims of the 7 June 1919 riots, has been returned to St George’s Square.
The monument was moved to Hastings Garden in 2010 before the St George’s Square renovation project started.
Last month Transport Minister Joe Mizzi announced the results of a public consultation exercise, in which a vast majority said it wanted to see the monument taken back to its original place.
The government said it was respecting the will of the public and the monument was being returned to a more dignified location, and one that is intrinsically linked with Malta’s constitutional history.
The monument was transported overnight, under the watchful eye of the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation. The transfer of the monument from Hastings Garden lasted several hours. Finishing works are being carried out on the monument.
