A Libyan man has been sentenced to five years imprisonment and fined €6,200 after he was found guilty of stealing cash and other items, holding seven people against their will, purchasing stolen goods, causing slight injury and carrying a knife.

The accused was also charged with attacking an officer, damaging an officer’s belongings, stealing a set of handcuffs and breaching the bail conditions from two previous cases.

Khaled Mahmoud Abulkasem pleaded guilty to all charges and apologised before Magistrate Joe Mifsud, presiding over the case.

In view of the multiple charges brought against Mr Abulkasem, and his checkered criminal record, the courts sentenced him to 5 years imprisonment and fined him €6,200. In addition to this, the courts also confiscated a total of €8,000 that the accused had paid the courts as a personal guarantee to be granted bail over previous cases.

The courts also ordered the accused to receive psychiatric medical attention.
