The Maltese government will keep its eyes open to the challenges and opportunities presented by the turbulent times Europe is going through, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat told the social partners today.

Addressing a MEUSCAC Core Group meeting this morning, Dr Muscat referred to the resignation of Italian PM Renzi, Brexit and the 13% jump in the price of oil.

Dr Muscat said he hoped that progress would be reached on migration during Malta’s upcoming EU Presidency.

On Brexit he said the Maltese presidency would have to be impartial whilst aiming for a fair deal for the UK but Britain cannot have the same advantages it currently enjoys under full membership.

He said there will be crucial phases in the negotiations with the UK, including on pending areas like access to the common market and the amount that the UK will need to pay to leave the EU.

Asked if Malta and Italy’s relationship on migration would change as a result of Renzi’s resignation, Dr Muscat said the issue was guided by Frontex so there should be no change after a new government is formed in Rome.

On whether the Italian political crisis will have any effect in the monetary sector, Dr Muscat said Malta wanted to be part of the solution and is willing to offer solutions.
