Minister for Competitiveness and Digital, Maritime and Services Economy Emmanuel Mallia was invited yesterday to the official launch of Silicone Valletta, an association that brings together CEOs of digital businesses based in Malta.

Dr Mallia discussed with its members as to how the digital economy plays a prominent role in creating competitiveness and economic growth, with online platforms providing an innovative opportunity for developing businesses.

Dr Mallia welcomed Silicone Valletta's formation in a speech and added how 'developments such as the Digital Single Market are bringing about a new paradigm offering novel business opportunities for those who can recognise and exploit them'. The Minister emphasised that 'the government considers that Malta can benefit economically if it continues to be attractive to digital businesses that capitalise on such developments'

The scope of Silicone Valletta is to build stronger relationships among professional Maltese start-up entrepreneurs and provide opportunities for its initial forty members to meet face-to-face in a social setting. This would encourage direct communication, cooperation and knowledge-sharing, as well as reassure the development of new Maltese professional start-up entrepreneurs and act as a central point for government and other stakeholders to consult and lobby with.

Silicone Valletta will be meeting on a monthly basis to discuss the current challenges of the industry and share ideas as to how digital business will impact Malta. The association is based on a culture of open dialogue and support and is thoroughly committed to giving Malta visibility on a global level.

KPMG supported the setup of Silicone Valletta.
