The Malta Communications Authority, in collaboration with the Department for Local Government, has launched #Webcheck, a project aimed at providing all local councils with the necessary tools, training and official guidelines on the use of social media.

During the launch, Minister Dr Emmanuel Mallia described social media as the 'new Oxygen' for public service and added that the government will keep its manifesto promise in not creating an IT divide within general public. Dr Mallia also emphasized on the importance of social media as it brings the public service closer to the general public, especially today as the use of mobile technology is so widespread. Minister Mallia also stressed that government is well prepared to reach the target of Free Wi-Fi states by 2020, as it already offers free Hot Spots in over 300 town centres, free Wi-Fi in governmental departments, free Wi-Fi in hospitals as well as a pilot programme for the public transport.

Parliamentary Secretary Dr Stefan Buontempo was also present for the launch. He explained that organisations, whether private or public, cannot afford to miss out on keeping engaged with their respective communities, even by using social media. However, he said that it important that there are rules on how to use these tools in the most effective ways.
