Polish murder suspect caught in Malta transferred to a Psychiatric Detention Centre in Poznan

Kajetan Poznanski, the person suspected of murdering his 30-year-old Italian language teacher, has been transferred from a detention center in Warsaw to a psychiatric ward at a detention center in the north western city of Poznan in Poland.

Over the coming weeks he is to undergo intense psychiatric examinations by several expert psychiatrists who will examine his current mental state and decide whether he is fit to stand trial.

Poznanski's current detention term expires on 4 February next year, however this is likely to be extended even further, Polish media report.

The first set of psychiatric experts appointed by the Warsaw prosecutor's office earlier this year had found that the 27-year-old was completely insane, and this opinion is categorical. This means that they did not have any doubts.

In Malta, he had pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.

Kajetan Poznanski is accused of murdering his 30-year-old teacher in Warsaw on 3 February and dismembering her body. The body was transported by taxi to his apartment and set on fire. He then fled the country, which led to a Europe-wide manhunt. Maltese police detained him two weeks later outside City Gate in Valletta following a tip off from their Polish counterparts.

During the first hearing earlier this year, details were given on the course of his crime. He explained that the lecturer was a random victim. He did not know her before. He killed because he was an element of "self-improvement". He did not express any remorse. He said he wanted to see if "human life is not worth more than a pig and a mosquito."

It is widely expected that the suspect will never be a position to stand trial and is expected to spend the rest of his life confined to a psychiatric detention center.
