MUHC supports research in ALS through RIDT

Tuesday, 3 January 2017, 16:03 Last update: about 8 years ago

In lieu of Christmas gifts, Malta University Holding Company Limited has made one final donation to the University of Malta Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT). Throughout the year, the company has organised numerous fund-raising schemes in their efforts to support research in ALS.

In fact, last May the company launched the first edition of Battle of the Brains - termed a quiz night with a difference. Following the success of the first event, the team went on to organise a sequel in September, which again proved to be a crowd pleaser. The nights were aimed at raising funds for RIDT to support research in ALS and in fact apart from donating a portion of proceeds to the cause, a fund-raising raffle was also organised on both occasions.

The company also organised collections among employees to raise even more funds. In fact MUHC was able to announce with pleasure that throughout the year, the company donated a total of €1,110. There is currently no cure for ALS, a disease that causes the death of neurons, which control voluntary muscles. This money will go towards research to be able to find out more about the actual disease, including what causes it.

Johanna Galea, one of the organisers of Battle of the Brains stated: "When we first met up with Wilfred Kenely, CEO of RIDT and heard all about ALS we were shocked by the harsh realities of the disease and thus made it our aim to help support research by raising both funds and awareness. We are extremely pleased by the positive response we received for the two events and also grateful for the massive external support that numerous companies showed towards the quiz nights. The team is already busy planning future events for 2017 and we're excited to raise even more funds for RIDT next time round."
