International survey on public perception of migration in European society launched

Monday, 16 January 2017, 15:09 Last update: about 8 years ago

The Foundation for the Promotion of Social Inclusion Malta is officially launching an internet survey on public perception of migration. The survey forms part of the European project "New forms of European Citizenship in Migration Era" (NECME) and seeks to explore how migration phenomena are affecting European civil society in terms of new experiences of civic engagement and active citizenship.

The project, funded under the Europe for Citizens programme of the European Union, involves 17 Civil society organisations from 16 different countries, is coordinated by the Italian Foundation "Giovanni e Francesca Falcone", managed by relatives and colleagues of the anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone, killed in 1992.

This is the first time that a Maltese organisation is collaborating with Fondazione Falcone on a EU project.

To have better understanding of the current situation, an international survey has been launched today. The survey, elaborated by Palermo (Italy) and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (Valmiera - LV), will make it possible to record and analyse the perception of migration and migrants in European society, also focusing on how migrants are victims of organised crime or are involved in it.

The survey will be conducted online during next two months and is available at https://it.surveymonkey.com/r/898B239

"Consistent migration flow during these last years has had a strong influence on European civil society. This is why we must all take an active role to overcome xenophobic, intolerant and  discriminating behaviours," said Maria Falcone, President of the Falcone Foundation.

Through the involvement of different stakeholders such as teachers, representatives of associations and European agencies, administrators of public institutions, journalists and law enforcement together with the adoption of different methodologies, participants will be stimulated to act, as single citizens or as organised civil society, to facilitate migrant inclusion in European society and will create synergies between civil society and public bodies, also by promoting the role of volunteering.
