Researcher and gynaecologist says WHO is lying about morning after pill, insists it is abortive

Doctor Bruno Mozzanega, researcher and gynaecologist, believes that the World Health Organisation's decision to pass the morning after pill as an anti-fertilisation pill was wrong. He claims that this definition should reflect that truth, that the morning after pill is abortive because it stops the process after fertilization. The mechanism of action is not anti ovulating but it impedes implantation, he explained.

Speaking to journalists at a very detailed and technical presentation he gave this morning, Dr Mozzanega explained that his studies prove that MAP is abortive. When asked by a journalist to explain why the WHO decided to define the MAP as non-abortive, Dr Mozzanega said that the organisation is wrong and insisted that women should protest against WHO and the gynaecologists who say otherwise.

"If the new Maltese law will now allow for this pill to be given without prescription, then politicians were probably deceived. To say that the MAP is not abortive even after looking at these studies is very worrying."

Dr Mozzanega was brought to Malta by the Life Network Foundation, the NGO which has been opposing the MAP feverously. Earlier this week, two doctors have filed a judicial protest against the Medicines Authority, saying they will hold it responsible for the consequences of introducing abortifacient Morning-After-Pill products. Dr Miriam Sciberras and Dr Klaus Vella Bardon filed the protest against Professor Anthony Serracino Inglott, the Chairman of the Medicines Authority.

While opening the conference, Miriam Sciberras, Chairperson of the Life Network Foundation, asked if the MAP debate is over or not. She said that the Medicines Council has taken its decision while the debate was still ongoing. "They ignored the facts when the evidence is scientific." She said politicians were misled.
