Democracy and freedom

Sunday, 19 February 2017, 08:33 Last update: about 8 years ago

The Leader of the Opposition seems to believe that the only way he can save his political skin is by imitating Dr Eddie Fenech Adami’s tactics of the 1980s. Back then, the slogan was “Xoghol, Gustizzja u LIberta” (Work, Justice and Freedom). Dr Busuttil has now coined the slogan: “Democracy and Freedom”.

Of course, Dr Busuttil could not use the word “work”, since there is more work to be had in Malta under this government than we can cope with. As regards the word ‘Justice’, the enormous reforms to our Justice system carried out under this government had been totally ignored by the previous PN government, even though most of these reforms had already been proposed by one of their own, Dr Franco Debono. Therefore, the only word left of Dr Eddie Fenech Adami’s slogan is the word ‘Freedom’, to which, for effect, he added the word “Democracy”.

What Simon Busuttil is forgetting is that we are now living in 2017 not 1981. Who in his/her right senses believes that we do not have freedom and democracy today? Simon Busuttil is equating negation of freedom of expression to Daphne Caruana Galizia’s case, when this woman happens to be the most despised blogger – not journalist – who has ever existed in our country. The Leader of the Opposition is walking on very thin ice.
