Saturday, 25 February 2017, 10:31 Last update: about 8 years ago

Colourful masks, large floats, crazy costumes will mark this weekend across the Maltese Islands, as the yearly Carnival festivities kick in.

This time of year gives children the chance to dress up like their favourite superhero or movie character, while families can enjoy dance routines and street entertainment.

On 15 February this year, the Carnival Artistic Director, Mr Jason Busuttil, said that this year's Carnival will bring back some old traditions lost over the years, including the participation of decorated carts and karrozzini, as well as band marches.

He also said that one float, which is dedicated to Malta's EU Presidency, is designed by renowned cartoonist Steve Bell.

The opening ceremony took place last Thursday at PjazzaTeatruRjal, Valletta.

Some of the events held today include, the Children's Carnival which began at 9.30 am and took place at St George's Square, Valletta. At 3 pm, a dance competition will be held at St George's square, together with the Grand Defilé performance. At 7 pm, the Hilarious Carnival including the traditional Qarċilla, a street theatre performance 'B'Tal-Linja Jaqbillek Żgur' and a lot more will occur at St George's Square.
