The board of directors for mental health services in Malta has met for the first time, after it was established by Health Minister Chris Fearne.

The Chairman of the Board is Dr Jan Chircop. A government statement read that the board brings different stakeholders within the mental health sector together, including medical professionals and NGOs. The board will also involve other stakeholders, like carers and patients, depending on the topics discussed.

Minister Fearne said that the board will work to ensure that mental health takes steps forward.

"The board will advise me, as Health Minister, regarding a new vision for mental health sector services offered by government," he said.

One of the board's first priorities will be to draw up a holistic strategy for mental healthcare services.
