The Partit Demokratiku has welcomed the amendment to the Criminal Code which was moved in Parliament last Wednesday.
The law to be amended saw a person sentenced to five years imprisonment for having involuntarily killed a man and injured his sister in a traffic accident in 2011.
"The removal of the minimum penalty, which was triggered in the recent case, leaves it up to the discretion of the magistrate presiding over the case to sentence offenders as he/she deems fit and according to case law," the PD said
Partit Demokratiku believes that while sentences for criminals should be tough, it also understands that some people are victims of circumstances, "and this should be taken into account when judgement is passed."
