More than 20 tonnes of waste were generated over the Carnival weekend, the Transport and Infrastructure Ministry said.

Workers removed some 11 tonnes of waste on Tuesday night, after the end of all Carnival activities.

The ministry said workers from the Cleansing Directorate were involved in extensive cleaning works in Valletta and Floriana between Friday and Tuesday.

Around 25 workers started clearing the waste at around 11:15pm on Tuesday, as soon as the festivities wound down. For the first time streets were washed using water bowsers. St Anne Road in Florian was opened to traffic within the space of two hours.

All Valletta roads used for the Carnival parades, especially St George’s Square, were cleansed. An extra one hundred waste bins were placed around the city this year.

The ministry said officials will assess what went on over the past days for better coordination in the future, particularly over when the kiosks should be removed.
