Wednesday, 1 March 2017, 11:25 Last update: about 8 years ago

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat believes that the next step forward on migration is that the European Union looks at the issue from a more internal viewpoint, the Department of Information said.

Migration was one of the main topics discussed between the PM and the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, as Dr Muscat continued his tour around European Capitals.

President Iohannis praised the priorities of the Maltese Presidency, saying that Romania supports them.

The discussion with President Klaus Iohannis also focused on the future of the European Union. They agreed that Europe has to be united and based on solidarity, whilst everyone has to understand that different member states move at different paces.

The meeting with Romanian Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu – the DOI did not give his name in its statement - focused on Brexit, the experience of Malta hosting the EU Council presidency and European funds.

The Prime Minister later flew to Greece where he discussed migration issues with Greek PM Tsipras.

On Tuesday, Dr Muscat visited Sweden and Prague. Tomorrow, he will conclude his tour in Cyprus and Italy.
