Supermarket chain Lidl will establish a regional distribution centre in Malta, Economy Minister Chris Cardona announced this evening.
He was speaking during a ‘Gvern li jisma’ consultation meeting.
Dr Cardona said the chain had reached a deal with Malta Enterprise and Malta Industrial Parks which would lead to the creation of more than 120 jobs and boost local exports.
The deal will also benefit local producers, he said, noting that the German chain would Lidl would be buying €22 million worth of products from local manufacturers within three years. Most of the products will be destined for export, he said. Currently, Lidl purchases around €3 million worth of products locally.
