UHM Voice of the Workers has ordered the Broadcasting Authority workers step up industrial action with immediate effect, by not packing or handling any documents/objects that relate to the move of their offices from Mile End Road to Valletta.

The proposed move has been the straw that broke the camel’s back for the BA workers, after signing an open later addressed to the Prime Minister and presented through the UHM, where they spoke of abusive management styles, a hostile work environment and a lack of direction with just a short time before the general election.

In addition, they wrote and spoke of in a subsequent protest about how the BA management are just rolling over the workers’ concerns about the move, from offices designed for their needs with adequate space to offices in Valletta that are four times smaller.

Just yesterday, the UHM and BA workers embarked on a silent protest outside parliament where they presented letters to MPs saying that Ms Borg Cardona must resign otherwise the Prime Minister must take action to address the situation.

Their last protest took place outside the BA headquarters where they spoke of “bullying” tactics employed by Ms Borg Cardona, and expressed their doubts at being able to provide the public with a fair and balanced public broadcasting system under this chairperson’s leadership.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat told UHM chief Josef Vella that the BA was an independent institution however he would be conducting a review of the situation.
