Nationalist Party deputy leader Mario de Marco said the PN is considering a shift in its original position on the media law as presented by the government.

Interviewed by The Malta Independent online editor Stephen Calleja on INDEPTH, Dr de Marco said that the criticism the PN levelled at what he described as a draconian law – together with that made by a good part of the media – had pushed the government into announcing changes to the law as initially proposed.

When the government made its plans public, the Nationalist Party had opposed the idea, among other things, that all current affairs websites need to be registered. It had said that it would vote against the law and will instruct people not to obey it when it came into force.

But strong criticism has led the government to announce that amendments will be made when the law is debated in Parliament later on this month.

 

Asked whether the PN is still intent on voting against the law, Dr de Marco said that one has to see what amendments the government will be presented and then a decision will be taken.
