Cleaning up Malta

Sunday, 2 April 2017, 09:06 Last update: about 8 years ago

When I look at the garbage for general household waste, almost all the garbage consists of plastic packaging. I am not aware that this type of plastic is being recycled. I think we should start recycling this too. And we should make another concerted effort as a nation to reduce the use of plastic bags (in Maltese: boroz [bags] and not basktijiet [baskets]). I just heard the news that Kenya is planning to ban plastic bags and in the UK one pays for plastic bags to reduce their use. We introduced this for carrier bags but left a big loophole as it did not include plastic bags.

We should also deal with the problem directly as well as tackle the problem of our water table (mean sea level aquifer. The reserve has fallen drastically and its salinity has risen excessively.

I would also like to ask whether used engine oil is being collected by WasteServ. Do they go and collect it themselves from mechanics and contractors who have big machinery?

Let us not poison the future of our children. Let us invest in a cleaner and healthier Malta. We can do it!
