New University Act proposes that all teaching staff in higher education should undergo training

A new legal framework specifically developed for the University of Malta was yesterday proposed by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo, part of which states that all teaching staff in higher education should undergo training.

The proposed framework, which Minister Bartolo described as a "tool for change",  aims at improving UOM by modernizing the role of university in society, providing long-term, modernised structures, whilst safe-guarding social inclusion and free higher education, amongst others.

By undergoing training, teaching staff are supported in continuous professional education, according to the Minister. The proposed law also aims at giving the University the role of "the critic and conscience of society," a role which he said is not common in other countries.

Mr Bartolo commented that the country must tackle complacency and think long-term for future challenges, despite the country's economic growth and employment rates.

University of Malta Rector Alfred Vlla delighted in the fact that a law will be presented specifically for the University, saying that is shows a "commitment by the state".

The public consultation will be open until June 30th. Feeback can be sent to [email protected]
