Winter league: San Ġiljan win another direct encounter

San Ġiljan Tum Invest kept their status as favourites to win this winter league, as they brushed aside Neptunes with a deserved 5-2 win. Despite the low margin between both teams, San Ġiljan controlled the game and scored the goals in important moments of the game where they looked that they have slacked a bit.

Neptunes don’t have the depth in the squad like San Ġiljan, and coach Zoran Maslovar is continuously working with the youngsters of the club to raise their level, so that they will be ready in the following campaigns.

San Ġiljan who had Dino Zammit missing, won the first session with the only goal scored by Ben Plumpton. Orlovic’s team managed to widen the gap to three goals in the second session through Andreas Galea and Aurelien Cousin respectively, but Jordan Camilleri kept his team’s hopes alive with his first goal of the game.

Peter Borg made sure that San Ġiljan stayed in control as he made the score 4-1 in the third session to practically seal the game. Ben Plumpton listed himself again amongst the scorers with a great personal action in the last minutes of the game, as Jeremy Abela scored the last goal of the game for Neptunes to make the score a little more respectable.

Sliema Betsson produced positive waterpolo to easily win 13-5 against Sirens in a game that wasn’t expected to turn the way it did. This win put Sliema alone in second place while gave the first defeat for Sirens after two draws.

Bogdan Rath’s team built a two-goal advantage winning the first session 4-2 and dictated the second session in which they managed to score five consecutive goals, to open a seven goal margin, as Brownrigg made the score 9-3 before the end of the second session.

The game was won and lost, and Sliema could control the game with no difficulty in the third session, as they scored from Michael Spiteri Staines and a brace by Christian Cluett to overlap Luke Caruana’s goal. The same rhythm was kept in the last session as Sliema won by an eight-goal margin.

In the first match of the day, Valletta McDonalds recorded their first win, defeating Exiles Jetfreight by a three-goal margin. Stephen Rizzo’s team were slightly better than their opponents managing to take a slender lead after the second session and consolidating it during the game.

Exiles were looking to build on their draw against Sirens and winning their first game with their latest acquisitions, but they couldn’t reach their opponents in decisive moments of the game.

Valletta were caught twice by Exiles in the first session, but after Kurt Griscti goal, Valletta took again the lead with two goals from Keith Galea and Daniel Paolella. Sean Xerri de Caro cancelled James Spiteri Staines’ goal in the third session, but the citizens scored twice to enlarge their gap to three goals.

Exiles still kept their heads in the game and scored two goals in the beginning of the last session, but Ryan Mock and Andrea Agius made sure that Valletta finish the game as winners.
