Controversy erupted this morning after the police issued a photo showing a number of officers rounding up African migrants in Marsa and checking their documents. (above)

In a statement in the afternoon the police said officers had checked the documents of 84 migrants but all had the relevant documentation and were released.

The police force said it plans to carry out other verification exercises from time to time.
