Gas-fired turbines to start working today

Monday, 24 April 2017, 12:57 Last update: about 8 years ago

Gas-fired turbines will be turned on today at Delimara Power Station, ending the use of heavy fuel oil.

In a press release about this switch, the Labour Party has called today "a historical day for our country."

"From using the fuel which pollutes the most, heavy fuel oil, our country will starting using gas, the cleanest fuel, to generate electricity," it said, calling the switch to gas-powered electricity  "a promise which was impossible for others to do."

"The cancer factory has closed," the press release stated, saying that it is "a sigh of relief" both for families living in the south of Malta "who have been inhaling smoke for years" and "a breath of fresh for the whole country".

The press release goes on to mention 'turnarounds' by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in the energy sector in the past four years. The list mentions the deduction of electricity and water bills, turning Enemalata fom a "bankrupt company" to one with increased earnings and investments, stability in fuel prices and gas cylinders, cleaner air, the dismantling of the chimney 'eyesore' in Marsaxlokk and the closure of the Marsa Power Station.
