Government allocates €8 million, sets up board to address injustices

Friday, 28 April 2017, 16:51 Last update: about 8 years ago

The government has allocated the sum of €8 million to address the injustices suffered by the police, port workers and labour corps officials. This measure was originally announced during last October's budget and in a press conference called today, the Minister of Finance and the Minister for Family and Social Solidarity, gave an update on this measure.

Minister Edward Scicluna explained that the government has set up a board to review the individuals applying to receive such money. He explained that the government came up with an estimate for these workers but did not divulge what the amount was. The adjudicating board will be chaired by Mark Musu and will fall under the Ministry for Family.

Minister Michael Farrugia explained that the scheme will be open for ex-police officers, former labour corps officials and ex-port workers. It was explained that the biggest obstacle to address this issue was the way Eurostat defined liabilities in the context of unpaid overtime.

He said that the government will address this anomaly which turned to injustice for many. It is expected that some 5,000 people become potential applicants. Heirs of ex-workers who passed away will also be able to apply.

These payments will be exempt from taxes.

Taking questions by journalists, Minister Scicluna commented on Ana Gomes's reaction, saying that the Socialist MEP voices her opinion on the allegations which she hears from her colleagues in Brussels. He believes that it is up to Keith Schembri to decide whether to appear before the Pana Committee or not.
