Godfrey Farrugia will not contest election with Labour Party

Wednesday, 3 May 2017, 16:00 Last update: about 8 years ago

Godfrey Farrugia, who served as Health Minister and later as Labour whip in this legislature, will not be contesting the election with the Labour Party, he said.

Writing on Facebook, the MP said that tomorrow he will be celebrating his 57th birthday and today he decided that “I do not deserve to contest with the party calling itself the Labour Party. I am a Labourite and I feel my place is not there.”

Dr Farrugia resigned from Labour whip last Saturday, writing an open letter to the Prime Minister in which he accused him of being Machiavellian and going against Labour Party principles.

His decision not to contest does not come as a surprise, given the harsh words he used in the resignation letter.

It is still to be seen whether he will be contesting with the Partit Demokratiku, which is led by his partner Marlene Farrugia, which has joined the Nationalist Party in a coalition.

In an interview this week, Marlene Farrugia has said that Godfrey Farrugia should contest the election with the Partit Demokratiku.
