A Romanian dockyard worker was seriously injured after he was hit by metal plates, the police said.

The accident took place at around 11:30pm last night. The man was working on a vessel docked in the Palumbo shipyard.

He was assisted on site by a medical team and officers from the Civil Protection Department.

The man was taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where he was found to be suffering from grievous injuries.

The police are investigating.
