The General Workers Union has called on the public to stop attacking financial institutions and let them get on with their work.
The FIAU and MFSA have been under heavy criticism following the media’s publication of two damning FIAU reports on Pilatus Bank, Keith Schembri, and Brian Tonna.
In a press conference outlining their electoral memorandum for the political parties, GWU President Josef Farrugia said that union memorandum was founded on five pillars which were pensions, health, housing, social security and disability, and other proposals.
With regard to pensions, the GWU are proposing amendments to the Social Security Act which will see the legislation be split into two separate acts, one for Retirement and Pensions, and one for Social Security and Welfare.
The union also reiterated its position that it was against second pillar pensions.
The GWU has proposed a more holistic plan for the health sector, and to fully convert all polyclinics to health centres which can become the first point of reference for citizens and thereby reduce pressure on Mater Dei.
In the housing sector, the union has called on whichever government is elected to tackle rapidly rising rental prices in the housing market.
GWU has also proposed that the government would rehabilitate dilapidated buildings that constitute a health and safety risk, should the owner not do so within a time period.
The government will then send the bill for the works carried out to the owners.
In the field of social security and disability, the union called on the government to continue building on standards and ensure that country fully meets the criteria established in Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
For the economy, the union called on the government to invest in new sectors such as FinTech, digital media, the green economy, and advanced manufacturing, in order to allow the country to have the human resources and capital for these emerging industries.
On Air Malta, the GWU said that the unions involved should be informed of any negotiations.
The GWU also proposed that maternal and paternal leave will become parental leave. The current system sees mothers gain full pay for 14 weeks then minimum government pay for four weeks. These extra four weeks will be made available for the father.
