MPs should not hold Positions of Trust – MEA

Friday, 19 May 2017, 15:28 Last update: about 8 years ago

The Malta Employers’ Association today appealed to all political parties to commit themselves, once elected, not to appoint MPs as chairpersons or in positions of trust.

This has been highlighted by the Association in its memorandum to the political parties. Placing MPs as chairpersons could result in a serious conflict of interest between their party allegiance and their responsibility towards the entity they are in charge of. At the very least, chairpersons who are running for elections should have relinquished their post if they are to project a credible image of themselves.

The MEA insisted that an important aspect of good governance is that government entities operate autonomously and are run by competent persons who should ideally enjoy the trust of all parties represented in parliament, and not by the MPs themselves.
